IELTS

International English Language Testing System is a standardised test to measure the English language ability of non-native speakers wishing to enroll in English-speaking universities where a candidate is assessed on four parameters being Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The test can be written in two forms, pen and paper or computer based. There are two exam bodies which conduct the IELTS exam

  • British Council
  • IDP : IELTS Australia

The test has two modules. Academic and General. Both are written for different purposes. The Academic test is for individuals who want to pursue education abroad. The General test is written for immigration purposes

The exam is graded on a band scale of 9.0 overall and this being the same for the individual modules. The test begins with the Listening module that lasts for 30 minutes (plus 10 minutes' transfer time) followed by Reading i.e 60 minutes writing being the last module i.e 60 minutes. The Speaking test is conducted by an examiner like an interview session on another day and lasts for 11–14 minutes.

The General exam follows the same pattern.
