TOEFL

The test is accepted by many English-speaking academic and professional institutions. TOEFL is one of the two major English-language tests in the world, the other being the IELTS.

Since its introduction in late 2005, the TOEFL Internet-based Test (iBT) format has progressively replaced the computer-based tests (CBT) and paper-based tests (PBT), although paper-based testing is still used in selected areas. The four-hour test consists of four sections, each measuring one of the basic language skills (while some tasks require integrating multiple skills), and all tasks focus on language used in an academic, higher-education environment. Note-taking is allowed during the TOEFL iBT test.

The exam begins with the reading module which consists of 3–4 passages, each containing 12–14 questions and last for 60-80 minutes. The Listening module involves 6–9 passages, each containing 5–6 questions lasting upto 90 minutes a mandatory break of 10 minutes is given to students and the speaking and writing modules are conducted thereafter. Speaking has 6 questions to answer and lasts for 20 minutes followed by writing to be completed in 50 minutes with 2 questions to be answered. A candidate is graded on 30 points for each module amounting to 120 points overall.
